How to choose Sadhu board?

Tips and recommendations on how to choose a Sadhu board for beginners

1. Nails Spacing.

Everyone understands that the smaller the distance between the nails, the easier it is to stand on them. The nail spacing in Sadhu boards starts at 8mm. This distance allows beginners to remain within their comfort zone. If your goal with nail-standing is purely acupressure, then this is the spacing to choose.

It might seem logical to start with the easiest option to gradually get used to the pain. For a first attempt, 8mm spacing is suitable for most people — without sharp pain, you'll experience a light stimulating effect. It’s like a trial version of the product without the main features.

But the Sadhu board can offer more.

10mm is the most popular nail spacing for a reason. It’s the ideal distance to dive into the practice, step out of your comfort zone, and challenge yourself.

If you plan to buy Sadhu board as a gift or for yourself with the intention of fully experiencing the practice, confidently choose 10mm spacing. These boards are typically in stock, so you won’t need to wait for them to be made.

Your first independent practice will likely last no more than a minute. Even this is a great achievement. But that’s the idea behind nail-standing — self-development, learning to feel and control your state. Wearing socks or standing with support are steps you may have to go through, but they’re not mandatory.

If you’re determined to progress, to notice and work through physical and emotional blockages, to become aware of and accept your state, then you will surely overcome this barrier and stand barefoot for as long as needed. Reaching a 5-minute mark will be a joy. You’ll understand what we mean when it happens. :)

12mm or 15mm is for true enthusiasts and experienced nail-standing practitioners who are not satisfied with their achievements and want to reach new heights of self-discovery.

2. Base Material of Sadhu Board.

Modern Sadhu boards are made from various materials to hold the nails. These can include natural wood (like our Oh! Sadhu boards), plywood, EVA foam, epoxy resin, etc. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages.

We’ll explain why we chose natural wood instead of other materials, even though it’s more challenging to work with. We believe the best nail-standing experience comes from using the finest and most natural materials. The practice begins with the board itself, from the moment you hold it in your hands. Natural wood has a unique tactile feel, a distinct aroma, and its own energy. Each board is unique due to the natural wood grain. Holding a piece of Mother Earth itself in your hands is calming and inspiring before practice. You’ll never get these feelings from “lifeless” plywood or EVA foam. Wood also has more weight than its synthetic counterparts. This might seem like a drawback if you consider it as something to carry around. However, for nail-standing practice, this is a benefit. A heavy board is more stable on the floor (always place any board on a yoga mat or other soft, non-slip surface for safety). Most importantly, when you finish your practice, nails often stick to your feet. A lightweight board can lift with your foot, making it hard to step off and potentially causing injury.

When choosing the material for your Sadhu board, ask yourself: which would you prefer to drink tea from — a porcelain cup or a plastic or paper cup?

3. Nails Material.

Sadhu boards typically use copper, galvanized, or bamboo nails.

From our experience and that of hundreds of our students during nail-standing practices, copper nails are the best. They feel warmer and more pleasant.

Copper is highly valued in many religions and esoteric traditions. It is considered a symbol of harmony, aiding in balance between the material and spiritual, and helps find inner peace. Copper is also the best electrical conductor and is believed to purify and protect against negative energy influences. It is used for treating energy blockages and stabilizing the biofield. Copper has antibacterial properties and never rusts.

Galvanized nails perform their function well, but attention must be paid to their quality. They’re often uneven in length, with burrs, very sharp, and poor galvanization.

We make our nails to order to high standards specifically for nail-standing. Our nails are safe, comfortable.

Bamboo nails are ideal if you plan to travel with your Sadhu board. Their main advantage is their lightness, but don’t forget the drawback of light boards! Bamboo nails are also more expensive than copper ones since each nail is handcrafted from bamboo sticks, and each board contains minimum 500 nails.

You should also pay attention to the nail pattern on the Sadhu board. The best layout is the “Flower of Life” (hexagonal). With this arrangement, the nails are evenly spaced. Around each nail, six neighboring nails are equidistant.

In contrast, diamond or square layouts have only four equidistant neighbors, with the rest being farther apart. This results in uneven pressure distribution on the soles of your feet.

4. Design, Shape, and Size.

Design: Choose a board that resonates with your feelings and associations with the practice. Pick a material, color, or engraving that inspires you, complements your views, and gives more meaning and direction to your nail-standing practice.

If you want something unique, we can create a custom board to your specifications, including personalized engraving.

Shape: Shapes can vary. The most popular are rectangular and oval. We also offer boards shaped like wings or footprints. They are more ergonomic and lighter (within limits to ensure safety during dismounting).

Size: Standard boards are 30-32 cm(11.8-12.6 in), suitable for shoe EU sizes 43-45(10-12 US). The working surface of these boards is 27-29 cm (10.6-11.5 in). If your shoe size is 46+(US 13+), choose a board 34 cm (13.5 in) or larger.

5. Budget, Accessories, Delivery.

Budget: Sadhu boards are not cheap, although they may seem simple — a small wooden plank and some nails. But it’s more complex than it looks.

It’s almost impossible to make a safe Sadhu board yourself without specialized equipment, knowledge, and skills.

We’ve designed a minimalist product to reduce costs while maintaining premium materials, catering to customers who don’t want to spend a lot or those just exploring nail-standing.

We also offer high-end custom boards with unique shapes, colors, engravings, inlays, or rare wood selections.

Accessories: If buying for personal use, basic packaging might suffice. But if purchasing as a gift or if details matter to you, look for brands that invest in their product presentation.

Our Oh! Sadhu boards come in elegant packaging suitable for gifting. Each board includes a storage pouch, a beginner’s guide, and incense sticks to create a cozy atmosphere for your first sessions.

Delivery: When you choose a Sadhu board, you should pay attention not only to the price of the board, but also to the shipping cost. We offer free international shipping, so you pay exactly what’s listed on the website — not a penny more.

Conclusion

We’ve covered the key points for choosing a Sadhu board: nail spacing, materials, design, service, and budget.

If you need more information, we’re happy to consult you. But remember one thing: choose a board based on your inner calling — one that evokes emotions and a sense of connection. This will make your nail-standing practice most enjoyable. Namaste!

Sadhu board Benefits

Sadhu board with nails is a unique tool for developing both body and mind. It is a multifunctional massager that effectively aids in training and recovery of both physical and mental states.

How sadhu board affects a body.

Nails stimulate acupuncture points on the soles of the feet—clusters of nerve endings connected to internal organs. Massaging these points improves bodily functions and enhances overall well-being.
Sadhu board helps eliminate muscle blocks and tension. When you stand on the nails, your entire body tenses, and you become more aware of these areas. During the practice, you work through these tensions almost automatically. After the session, you experience relaxation, bringing lightness and freedom to the body.
Nail-standing stimulates lymphatic flow, improves blood circulation and metabolism, promoting overall health.
Standing on nails increases pain tolerance, helping you better handle physical challenges.

How sadhu board affects a mind.

Nail-standing helps overcome stressful situations and take control of emotions. In today's challenging times, stress and psychological trauma disturb us almost daily. While Sadhu board won’t cure you—it’s not a panacea—it acts as a small "home psychologist," calming, distracting, and resetting your mental state. In cases of severe stress or disorders such as PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), Sadhu board is used as an auxiliary tool in comprehensive therapy.
Sadhu board develops the skill of accepting and letting go of pain. While standing on nails, you intentionally accept the pain, become aware of it, and take control over it. This skill transfers to other areas of life when you need to gain mental control over discomfort.
Standing on nails promotes deep relaxation. After deliberate and controlled stress, a phase of confidence, calm, and joy follows—like solving a complex problem on your own.
Sadhu board improves focus and helps concentrate on what’s important. When you stand on nails, all distractions fade away. You are left one-on-one, focused only on the essential. This skill is often what we lack in achieving our goals and desires.
It facilitates grounding. On the nails, you are brought back to your body. The mind releases negative emotions or pushes them to the background, placing you in the "here and now."
It restores inner resources. After nail-standing practice, your mind feels refreshed, like after a good sleep; your thoughts harmonize, and you feel ready to move forward, act, and create.
Sadhu board enhances mindfulness and harmony. The very idea of practicing nail-standing shows that a person has consciously decided to improve their skills or get rid of negative states and harmful psychological habits. The practice of standing on nails is aimed at a deliberate choice of pain and its control. Regular practice, like going to the gym, develops your mindfulness.
